The Memoir Group had joined the others on the deck. Amy Fairchild and a young man, in the black pants–white shirt uniform that indicated a server, were bringing trays of hors d’oeuvres out in the approaching dusk. Amy was wearing a chef’s white jacket and checked pants. She looked much as Sophie imagined Faith would have at that age. She went over to her. “Hi! This all looks delicious,” she said and was delighted with the big hug Amy gave her. Still a kid.

“Try the seafood pot stickers—crab, lobster, and shrimp with a little chive. Oh, and the ham and cheese puffed pastry squares with Kozlik’s sweet and smoky mustard. It’s Mom’s recipe. I taught the chef. You make it on a sheet pan in layers and then cut it up into little squares after it comes out of the oven. There’s also a platter of cut-up veggies from King Hill farm in Penobscot with dipping sauces. And freshly baked breadsticks that we wrapped in slices of prosciutto.”

“I’m going back to make dinner for Uncle Paul, but I can’t resist some of these first,” Sophie said, reaching for one of the breadsticks.

The cost for day students included lunch and dinner, but Sophie had the feeling she’d want to go home after a full day. Babs and Alexandra, social creatures that they were, would probably stay most nights, and in the future they should probably take two cars. She’d come back for them tonight unless they wanted to go back soon.

“I’ll let you know when we’re doing something special for dinner,” Amy said. “Although most of them are. Tonight prime rib is one of the choices. Dessert is going to be on the beach. The Childses invited everyone to a bonfire once it’s dark. We’ve got citronella torches to keep the bugs away. You might not want to miss it. Cal will be singing and telling jokes. It’s fun, and the fire looks beautiful so close to the water.”

“Don’t tell me Alexandra is going to find out about s’mores!” Sophie laughed.

“Oh yes, and Darlene, who does most of the baking, made a ton of Whoopie Pies, too. Besides the Marshmallow Fluff–chocolate cake wicked good traditional ones, she also does maple filling and blueberry with lemon cake, in case someone doesn’t like chocolate, which I cannot imagine! Did you know Whoopie Pies are the official Maine state treat? Like the state bird and other stuff.”

“No, I did not,” Sophie said in mock solemnity, “but if I’m ever on Jeopardy, this fact could come in handy.” They both laughed. It was wonderful to see Amy so happy in her job.

“I have to go and finish the dinner prep,” Amy said. “If you don’t make it to the beach later, I’ll send some of the pies back with your mom.”

“Those two ladies won’t have touched them I bet. Think of the carbs!” Sophie hugged Amy good-bye and decided to fill one of the small plates with the hors d’oeuvres. Paul liked to eat on the late side, and Sophie wanted a chance to check out the whole group further.
